Film studies Horror Mise-en-scene

The film i will be doing my horror study on is The Blair witch project which was made in 1999. Its is an American found footage horror film which was directed and written by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Shanchez. The plot for the film was simply based around Three film making students who visit the woods. They go there to shoot a documentary video about a local urban legend called the Blair Witch for there college. The main actors and actress played themselves in this film playing Heather DonahueMichael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard. The film is used based of a true story which makes. Almost the whole movie was unscripted. That is why no other "found-footage" movie after Blair witch Project reached the intensity of the original. It still makes the audience feel uncomfortable due to its mystery.

The setting of the film, is in the woods near Boston (America) The woods is throughout most of the film is dark and gloomy with the quiet atmosphere which builds up to jump scares.  The quiet whistle of birds in the background. As the film is found footage the angles and views and even sound are quiet messy being knocked about creating noises that are just rustling against the camera and movement causing unsteady video footage making view hard to see whats going on sometimes. especially in the tent scene when the mysterious sound of children laughing. which is then followed by a running scene out of the tent which makes the stability of the camera poor.

The props used in the films are items such as camera's and Battery Torches. These are intended for project use but in the film are used as recording and having some light on when the Blair Witch is picking the protagonists off one by one. The props are very limited in this film. Also the tent. The tent with all their camping equipment in shows the fact that the protagonists where not planning nothing major and simply where having a camping trip along with their project search and findings.

The Facial expressions and body language at the start of the film shows determination and hope to be able to come across good findings for the project. But when in the woods and the clues and mysterious happenings of the Blair which occurs. Tears and panic is shared within the group running and hiding getting upset due to the Witchcraft which drives them insane to point of them leading themselves to their own death. Shivering and spine chilling scenes create the protagonists to show their feelings and show true emotion during their recording and scenes on the camera. The end of the film shows an apology scene that is made from Heather explaining how the whole things is her fault but during this it really shows the audience that she is regretting her mistake of doing this project and also her feelings towards her near death experience .  She concludes this with "I am going to die out here". she cry's and struggles talk. The heavy breathing and non focus of her eyes on the camera suggests that the Blair witch is coming closer to her.

The lighting and Color in the film is very dull and bland being mainly dark brown colors and wood like scenery creating green and different shades of wild life colors such as brown and black. The lighting from the sun during the day creates brightness during the morning and day time wood scenes, but as most of the film takes place during the night the only main light is from the torch and the camera. It is very low- key writing.

Unit 45
Interview Review Task

In this review i will be talking about a good example and as bad example of interviews.

The good example of an interview:

"Harrison Ford Won't Answer Star Wars Questions"

This interview took place on the Jimmy Kimmel live show. This interview was set up behind the scenes. The interview was based a rumoured  comedy story about Star wars Characters Han Solo who was  played by Harrison ford and Chewbacca who was played by Peter Mayhew.
The interview was based with Harrison ford explaining how he can't answer any star wars questions and with an Audience Q and A and them asking questions about star wars as well as being dressed up as famous star wars characters, This is then followed with a scripted and heated entertaining argument with Chewbacca. Harrison ford then storms out about it leaving with a dramatic leaving. This was scripted and was there to provide entertainment to those who watch and love and follow the star wars fan base.

The bad example of an interview:

Harry Redknapp "I'm no wheeler dealer" Sky sports news report

After Tottenham's defeat to Wigan, Sky's Rob Palmer chose the wrong turn of phrase when trying to find out if Harry Redknapp plans any further dealings in the transfer market before the window closes at the end of August. This clearly offended the football manager and he used explicit language to prove this and also stormed away from the interview. This was a bad interview but a great example of how interviews should be careful how the ask questions and word them especially after a football loss or unhappy setting or happening before the interview.

The Harry Redknapp interview has strong language. Just to be sure before viewing.

Video production homework
At the start of our session we had a group discussion on what stories we should introduce to our news report that will be read out by the two members of the group who were nominated the talent and presenters. We also talked about the relevance and who the talent could elaborate on these stories.
Roles:
·         Floor manager- The floor manager job is an overall job that checks and makes sure equipment is set up correctly. They assist in planning and prepping areas such as sound, cameras and editing crew are ready to go. When all is set from the editing and recording room the floor manager counts the talent which is the people in front of the camera in our project it was news reporters. Once the count them in and they begin they assist in background rolls such as telling them what camera to look at and when the talent have finished and are wrapping up they will go and tell the editing crew to stop recording.
·         Sound engineer- The sound engineer is in charge of all recordings and sound volume on set. First of all this is started by adding and putting mics on or with the talent. Then they will do a check and make sure all voices our clear by doing basic testing skills such as counting to five. Also after or during this process they must get all the sounds and voices are projected correctly on the editing software (Tricaster) using the sound mixer.
·         Vision mixer- The vision mixer edits the output of the camera live, such as adding text and pictures when necessary. But not everything done by the vision mixer is live. During the pre recording which is before the recording they will create or prepare a background or any other special effect to fade in or set for when the recording is taking place.
·         Director- the Director delegates other job roles and organizes what happens. They control and know everything that is going on and off set. The main focus is getting the talent to do their part correctly. For example for our newsroom our director was giving the talent information and sources to read out. Also they make sure everything is in check and go before the recording starts. This is then all confirmed by both the director and floor manager and recording starts. During the recording the manager will look out for faults and be on the case straight away if so. During the post recording time which is when recordings is finished the manager will decide if it works and whether or not the recording will have to be done again.
·         Presenter- On set the presenter is also known as talent. The talent is the members in front of the screen and although most of their information and what they need to do comes from the okay of the director. They also need to talk to other staff and members of the production team to understand full on the recording. They will perform to the best of their ability and they will make be in front of the camera acting or reporting.
·         Production editor- The production editor controls editing and make sure everything such as fade in’s and fade out’s are on time during the recording. They are also the member of the crew who initiates the recording and starts it and then either the production assistant or editor will tell the floor manager to start the countdown. They edit on a computer using good software or in our production team case we used a tricaster which is an editor and a mixer. They also then publish the work that’s been carried out live and maybe add anything if needed.
·         Production assistant- The production assistant is the helper of the production editor. They do the same job really but just giving a helping hand and doing small jobs such as communicating between production editor and floor manager or swapping cameras using editing tools, hardware or software.
·         Camera men/women- The camera men control the angle and position of the camera. Not only have they that they deal with effects such as focused, brightness and saturation.

I think overall as a group to improve we could all improve on communications. As debate occurred and some thoughts where pushed to a side that maybe we should of kept in. We could have also maybe got timings of things better such as fades on the editing crew and speech and clearness from the talent but as a group I thought we done really well for our first time of real a practice test.

Scottish Referendum

Hello again Blog. I am going to give my thoughts on the Scottish independence Referendum. The vote takes place tomorrow and this will decide whether or not  Scotland leave the UK and become an independent country. Around four million people in Scotland have voted and The vote for yes is seeming very popular. Although, if the Scottish Vote wins as yes a lot of things will change for the Scottish such as their currency, They won't have the NHS, and they will have no support from the UK. Also if by a small chance a war sparks up they  will be on their own unless we once again form an alliance. They believe that they will have more freedom and more rights from being independent and having their own rules.
For British people such as myself the only major change is that our economy will be smaller and certain items from Scotland maybe more expensive such as Whisky and Oil. Also if Scotland do leave, the British flag (The union flag) will change and lose its blue color.

In my opinion i think that the Scottish will vote yes because of their very strong beliefs about changing and becoming free and not British. But i think they will vote no. Britain and Scotland have been in a union together for 305 years so why change now. Scotland will also lose so many benefits and i also think breaking up from each other we ill become a more feeble and easier target if war occurs as we will be parted.

I watched the official Scottish video on voting yes. They use a deep video using contrasting videos and pictures. The Scottish parts of the video are all happy and jolly with colorful images and excitement on the peoples faces. On the other hand when the video was talking about Britain the scenes where put into a gloomy black and white screen and flashbacks of subjects and things that have happened. I think this video is very stereotypical and really dark in a way of it making out Britain are really bad and making out like Britain have destroyed Scotland. This is Clearly not true, yet they continue to slate British ways and people such as David Cameron.
